LITERACY

Literacy is the ability to read and write. This is essential for a child's ability to learn at school, and to engage effectively in society.

"Literacy involves students listening to, reading, viewing, speaking, writing and creating oral, print, visual and digital texts, and using and modifying language for different purposes in a range of contexts." (ACARA, 2016)

What are some indications of deficits in my child's literacy?

  • Not remembering or understanding what they have just read

  • Confuses different sounds and has difficulty understanding their differences

  • Writing is slow and takes a lot of effort

  • Mispronouncing sounds or groups of sounds

  • Guessing the words they are reading based on the first letter, rather than attempting to read it

  • Missing words when reading

  • Getting upset when it is time to read or write
