Raising Hands

Expressive language is spoken words that are put together to form sentences through the correct use of vocabulary and grammar. Expressive language skills allow your child to convey messages using spoken and written language.

How do I know if my child is having difficulty in this area?

  • Understanding what is said or written to them, but having difficulty communicating

  • Difficulty relating the connections between words and ideas that they represent

  • Is usually quiet or responds with one-word or short phrases

  • Often uses the word "um" in response to questions, or repeats the question

  • Smaller vocabulary than peers of the same age

  • Puts together fewer words to make a sentence when compared to peers of the same age
